My Scots son-in-law has a grey kilt, which he has worn from time to time, instead of his usual tartan one. I did suggest it might not be the wisest thing to do to pick up his lads from school when wearing it, in case they were teased.

Skirt/kilt......2 completely different things....cannot be compared!! Why on earth would anyone slag off a kilt?? Other than ignorance!
Personally I prefer the proper kilts (tartan) as opposed to the self coloured ones (mostly black or grey) that people tend to see as fashionable - but that's what they are....not traditional kilts!
