Our greatest monarchs have been women, but they didn't get there other than being second best option.
Not really, Boudi.  There was no one for them to be second best to - hence they became the monarch.

don't forget Lady Jane Grey who was actually Queen for 90 days, was it, but never crowned?

Weren't William and Mary (of Orange) technically asked as a 'couple' as opposed to a King and his consort?

It is outdated now though for this day and age (IMO) as faith/belief should be a personal thing, (not something one is forced to believe) - with no discrimination, as there should not be discrimination over gender.
What do you mean by a 'personal thing', Jan?  Are you suggesting that no-one should be allowed to indicate in any external way that they adhere to a particular belief system?

No Andy - you misunderstand me  :)  If you read what I put, I did say that it should not be something one is forced to believe. To have a religion/belief/faith/no faith ... for any of us is a personal thing - and that is whether we choose to indicate in any external way or not that we 'adhere' to a particular belief system. Would any of us want to be told what to believe or what not to believe - I think not - then why should a Monarch be 'told' or be 'expected' to conform to something they may not feel is right for them?

Well if this change in the succession happens I can certainly live with it. I've only ever had a Queen. I pray that it happens easily with no repercussions over here. But if it means constitutional change over here, and I think it will, Her Majesty can kiss her Canada good bye.

I wasn't giving an exhaustive list, and the two I gave are considered amongst our very greatest monarchs, above most kings, Anne likewise had the Marlborough victories to tuck in her frock, but she's not considered one of our greats.  Mary was a regnant queen indeed.  Jane was queen for 9 days before her deposition.

The question of the succession was put to our Prime Minister Harper today. He says no. It will involve changing the Canadian constitution and he refuses to do that. Probably for the worries I mentioned before and he stated Canada sees no reason to go along with this our concern these days is the economy.

What would happen if the UK decided to go it alone on this matter, then?

The king of G Britain and the King of Hanover were the same from George I  until William IV, but then Victoria couldn't take it due to being a woman.  Likewise the head of state in differing commonwealth countries would change.  The mothod of choosing that head would be consistent for each country.  I suspect the whole point will be lost thoughh, and people would just pack it all in.

I suppose Canada can put off dealing with it until there is a woman first born child and first in line. Could be over 50yrs until we have another Queen. Perhaps the separatist cause will be long dead by then.
