sporting heros (that don't play for my team!)
« on: April 03, 2011, 23:14:27 »
it's that man love thing to have those sporting icons.... but there is something about admiring someone who does not bat for my side.. that really sets the standards of one's taste in sport... so while Boston T is doin his high culture thing i thought i'd bring it down to a level we can all er reason with.... teams individuals different sports

here's a few to start off with

Kenny dalglish
Michael Owen
Liverpool in the 1980s (very grudgingly ...though if i'd known then that the refereeing was biased!)
the Croatian Boban with Liberian George Weah who played for AC Milan in the late 90s
the chelsea italians Vialli/Zola di Matteo + Poyet
Vialli Ravenelli Juve
Zidane Del Piero Juve (serie A used to be on channel 4)

Justine Henin  my all time fav tennis star who i am not sure i have ever watched more than the equivalent of a single set ....  but for the unlikeliest world number 1
Steffi Graff

Steve Waugh

the list can be pretty endless!

GOD BLESS!

Peace and Love,

My husband, son and myself have absolutely no interest in sport whatsoever, thank goodness.

It seems crackers to me that footballers, in particular, get paid vast somes of money just for kicking a ball around! Many of them behave very badly like that ghastly, thick as two short planks, Rooney. :m: Oh for the days when sport was something you did to let off steam at the weekend when relaxing from a week of proper work!

Michael Chang,  The come back king of tennis

Bjorn Borg, I'll never forget those matches with McEnroe

Thierry Henry, Saw him play at Fratton Park, the season Arsenal went unbeaten, the home fans were applauding the shear display of genius on the pitch .

Lance Armstrong, Incredible to survive cancer then win the Tour DE France
7 times.

Niki Lauda, involved in an incredible accident in the 76 season that put him in a coma and left him with severe burns to the face, but six weeks later he was back in an F1 car, and went on to win the 1976 F1 title by 1 point.

there are probably many more...

Less a human hero - though one of those as well.  The winner of the 1981 Grand National when cancer-recoverer Bob Champion rode Aldaniti (injury-recoverer) to the title.

Can't stand horse-racing - but what a story.
Growing old is compulsory. Growing up is optional.

Have you visited the Garw Valley Railway yet?

JUST politics - not just politics

Definitely agree on the Bob Champion story Andy, but my other sporting heroes are:

Kenny Dalglish (or King Kenny!!)
Tommy Burns
Ally McCoist
Davie Cooper (Super Cooper!)
Alan Hansen (From his Partick Thistle days - Don't like that he forgets himself and spent the World Cup talking about "we" for England!? Numpty!!)
Ben Hogan (I am my father's daughter!!)
Barry McGuigan
Lorenzo Amoruso (although not purely for his footballing skills..... w:)
Gavin Hastings
Chris Paterson
