Hey mclarkie! No I didn't.  I said "Mhm, something has happened to that thread - and I wonder if McClarkie knows anything, I noticed he was on earlier.  Has something happened to the board McC?"  Sounds like you took it as an accusation.  Like you extrapolated from one statement to an assumption or an accusation. 

  I wondered if you knew if there was anything amiss with the board.  I haven't been able to get on much at all in the last few days - "smf error" or something.

The recent spate of SMF errors has been due to emergency action needed because of an imminent disk failure.

This is what they said:

As you will have seen the last 3 days have been hard on our servers, unfortunately our drive on server 1 was failing, we had to act quickly which is why we didn't have any advance notice, if we did not act all users data would have been lost (although we have backups would have taken much longer to move over)

So what happened?

We put in the new drive and simply began moving over the data, this was causing a large amount of I/o requests which resulted in slower load times.
Due to the amount of traffic smfnew receives the sync was taking a long time. Yesterday we took the decision to turn the server off to traffic to make sure everything was synced quickly before the drive failed.
All data is now over and if there are any issues please report them ASAP.

We are extremely sorry for this downtime but do not predict further downtime as a result of the maintenance.

I hope you all are forgiving and understand this was nessissary to protect your data.

I wonder why this problem didn't occur on the other SMF forum I am a member of?  As for my being the most prolific poster here - this might be the first post I've made in several days.  I find that this place is becoming too parochial and predictable.  Oh well, better sign off and go complete two sets of accounts I've got to get ready by tonight!!
