Holidays
« on: July 31, 2011, 08:50:32 »
Where and when are you taking your main ones? (if you dare answer the second part!)
If you had your choice with no carbon footprint of financial worries where would you take it?

I am about to have 2 weeks off on our narrow-boat cruising the Cheshire Ring - but if I had my choice it would involve warm seas.....and/or India, the Far East, the Americas..... so much of the world I would love to see, so little time to see it....

Will most of the holiday be spent travelling up to Cheshire and back again?  How long will you actually get on the Cheshire ring?

I haven't decided on anywhere or anything though I'm thinking September after my work colleagues who have children off school have been off.  Been to Berlin for a long weekend in June - fantastic place to see.  And it was the time of the linden blossom on Unter der Linden.  :)

If I had my choice I would take a holiday somewhere warm (not too warm), beautiful, peaceful and close to the sea - with great places to eat and interesting places to visit. Would like to do more traveling - like you say Andrew - so much of the world to see ...

I have some vouchers left from when I won a little Spa break in Durham - so I hope to make use of them if we manage to get away for a weekend - perhaps at Center parcs nr Penrith (not too far from Durham). Also might take a camping break - not done that for years.

I have always disliked holidays, even as a child. I hate being out of my usual routines.

I've had my holiday - mid-July, I went down to visit my sister in Hampshire for a week. She's coming up to take my Dad up to Inverness for a week on Saturday, so 'technically' that will be another "holiday" for me(!!!)
If I could go anywhere....? Jeez, there is a list...: I'll ALWAYS want to go to NYC - absolutely LOVE it: so much to see and do and it can be as hectic or relaxing as you want. Would also love to go back to Washington DC. Want to visit friends in Australia, would love to go back to Ieper in Belgium and spend more time there (overnight visit last time)
A holiday lying by the pool for a week/fortnight and doing nothing else but sunbathe has never appealled. I don't mind doing that for a WEE bit of the time but then I get bored and need to go and do something or see something of where I am. I've never understood the "we didn't need to leave the apartment complex because everything was there" type of holiday. What's the point of going abroad and not seeing something of the country you're in....but each to their own!!

Whatever everyone is doing - happy holidays!!! (lol, I sound like an American at Christmas!!!)

Right with you there! - Mind you I love a long swim in the sea as well - and by long I mean a mile or so, which, since I don't do crawl, takes a bit of time!

Oh yes, Andrew, I like a swim in the sea too - although a mile?? That's impressive...!! I'm just talking about a wee bit here and there, lol!
But I just find it mad that folk can land in a country and take off a week or fortnight later, having seen nothing of that country....

Kay and I will be spending a long week (Friday evening to Sunday next) walking part of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path in mid-September.  We've done Amroth to West Angle Bay, so far (that's the southern end), but are thinking of starting at the other (northern) end and working our way back towards St Davids.  8 days to do things in, so will probably aim for 5 days' actual walking, 2 days' relaxing every 3rd day, and of course 1 day travelling back to S. E Wales.

Given the choice, it would either be walking in the Himalayas (again), visiting S. America or Africa (the only liveable continents I've never visited) or a tour around Australia and NZ.

Have you visited the Garw Valley Railway yet?

Eli, I could not agree more about people being somewhere for 2 weeks and never seeing anything of the country - Do you know the Monty Python sketch about the travel agent and the customer who would not shut up about Watney's bleeding Red Barrel? :-)
Andy - would you care to expand (when you get back from Greenbelt!) on you comment about the only 'liveable' continents?

Just got back (... well yesterday) from a weekend break in Center parcs (as above).  We booked for the spa in the aqua sana for when we arrived (lots of fragrant themed steam baths and a sauna to help relaxation and clearing pores etc).

Took advantage of the discounts on the VIP pass from visit Durham. Visited Durham Cathedral again but this time with youngest daughter too. She loved taking some very arty photos in the cloisters part and hubby got to climb the tower. Apparently last time we were only about 15 steps from the top when I chickened out  :doh

Saw the Silver Swan at the Bowes museum (google it) and also got to see High Force (waterfall) at Teesdale - which I have been wanting to do for yrs. One visitor attraction we visited (Thorpe farm) seemed to have scaled down what it had listed on offer in the VIP pass -  probably due to recession (sadly). No animals and no birds of prey centre - though the food we had there was nice.

On traveling back to lancs we visited the Lakes - and guess what ????

.... it rained  )):

I realise that is possible to live on Antarctica, but it is not really simple.  I have visited or lived in Europe, Asia, N. America, Australasia/Oceania.  I have never visited Africa or S. America (I treat N. and S. America as separate continents, though not everyone does).

I googled it Jan.  Ooooh I might try and get to Teesdale one day.  The Lake District has been on my mind for some time.  Never been.
