The Power Of Prayer?

I saw this on the internet. You may have seen it before as it is on the net, but I am sharing it anyway   

Drummond's Bar began construction on an expansion of their building to increase their business. In response, the local Baptist Church started a campaign to block the bar from expanding with petitions and prayers. Work progressed right up until the week before the grand reopening when lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground! After the bar burned to the ground by the lightning strike, the church folks were rather smug in their outlook, bragging about "the power of prayer," until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church "was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means." In its reply to the court, the church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise. The judge read through the plaintiff's complaint and the defendant's reply, and at the opening hearing he commented, "I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but it appears from the paperwork that we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer and an entire church congregation that now does not."

would love to know the outcome... i tried to find the original story but it's not quite available without subscription... it's set in Texas Mount Vernon Clarke County?

it's not unusual for prayers to be said without fear of consequences even prayers of good intent of the not in my back yard or please don't let me have to lift a finger or get involved

It might be one of those 'legend' type stories Ecu - I found it featured on Snopes too.

but it does have a bit of a lesson to it and it is quite funny

Snopes is one of the more useful websites (there is also hoaxslayer - also useful) which people can refer to if they suspect say, the content of an email, to be a hoax, urban legend, scam or a virus. They describe themselves as The definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation.
If you have your doubts about an email story being true, you can cross reference it (scan a line in of it and then put it into a google search along with the word 'Snopes' or 'Hoaxslayer') and it will usually come up with more info.

Of course, had the case been real, the congregation could have claimed they were praying for the bar to be prevented from being expanded in the first place, not for the already-constructed expansion and pre-existing building being destroyed... - but yes, it is a salutary parable...

hmmm if it were church of england perhaps... but i have certainly been amongst some pretty startling prayers ..what's worse they get a big cheer from others in the group!
