NotW to close

I am in two minds at this news.  I can't remember a time when there wasn't some sort of question over its journalism, so I'm partly glad that it is closing: however, the context in which the closure has been announced is nothing but cynical on the part of News International.  I think that it is even more important now that the proposed BSkyB buy-out is stopped, at least until there has been a full inquiry into the circumstances around the hacking issue.

Trashy or not, its the way in which Rupert Murdoch and his minions have tried (unsuccessfully) to close off debate that worries me.

Remember that this paper is a major contributor to News International and to close it so as to limit awkward questions is oh so cynical.

I have no doubt at all Murdoch is closing the NotW for purely business reasons, and not for any moral ones. Hopefully the Government won't be too quick to allow News international to take over BSkyB.

the only people suffering are the 200 workers.  It will reopen as the Sun on sunday and nothing will change.  Brooks is there to take the spotlight off james murdoch

was listening to late night feature with one or two ex NOW journalists... one of them was really waxing lyrical and nostalgiac about it's role as investigative newspaper journalism...

i have to say i am intrigued by this cos me like i sadi before am the last person to search those pages for news .... 

there was something implicit about ... and interestingly the newspaper has been in the public arena for over a hundred and sixty years! that under Rupert Murdoch things have got really cras....  now me i confess to dunno when News International took over NOW so i was certainly left pondering that tradition of abject sleeze and all the worst aspects of humanity yodeled along with self righteous garbage.... was the former one wonders meant to attract funds to payroll 'investigative journalism' like some of the scoops they are alleged to have captured in the past ... a bit like the ghastly sentimentality of Walt disney paid for the nature films... where this has an intriguing relevance is well would some of these stories have come to light at all?  like are they really taking the role of the watergate journalists in the uk media or what are they really held with any respect and thankfulness about?... the broader picture is interesting i feel

the news that energy prices are set rise again has been completely overshadowed by this latest scandal, one which only effects a small number of people and mostly celebs!

Murdoch (both father and son) and the executives of News International are certainly not fit and proper persons to run any News organisation.  They should be blocked, for life, from taking over BSkyB or any other TV company which broadcasts in Britain.  There are lots of innocent workers at the NOTW who are being thrown into unemployment by these ruthless criminals.

It may not affect us personally - but it does need to be dealt with as it is quite serious even though it might only affect a small number. Evil and corruption cannot go unchallenged (IMO)

Energy prices - they are supposed to be 'being investigated'. We generally don't have any power as individuals to control the energy prices - the only thing we can do is change our suppliers or get a fixed deal (for a time). Its likely though that other suppliers are going to increase their prices too. In a bit we will all be sat outside our homes around camp fires, burning our junkmail  to keep warm.

High energy costs are going to mean people are really going to suffer this coming winter, elderly will die.
We were told that deregulating the industry would drive down prices as there would be greater competition. that has not happened.
This little press scandal will blow over and Murdoch will get BSky eventually, and sales of his other papers will rise due to the gap left by the demise of the NOTW. the gullible British people will continue to buy News International papers because the like reading the selatous private stuff that has lead to the phone hacking. where there is a market someone will find a way to fill it.

That might be a problem, Martin.  Murdoch already owns several of the channels that use the Sky platform, such as FX (which does some excellent programming).  However, I 'd agree with the banning them from running news outlets - both TV and physical.

Not sure, Mike.  I have this tentative feeling that this yet another ploy by the hucksters of the media.
