Not quite sure what you mean by 'at its heart'... - do you mean that the name of the town contains the names of two other cities or do you mean that within the boundaries of the 'town' there are 2 cities? - If the latter I would guess it is Greater London with the cities being the City Of London and (Westminster?)
If the former I would say probably Londonderry - the name including London and Derry - but I thought that place is a city with 2 alternative names.

Some interesting answers.  ecu, you were right - I did have London (the City of London and the City of Westminster) in mind, but I was also interested to see Andrew's interpretation.  Do you know of any other places where more than one coty (or anything else for that matter) is subsumed under a larger title.  For instance, the capital of Nepal is Kathmandu, but this now includes the cities of Katmandu itself and of Patan (the two being divided by a river).  Then, there is a 3rd city (Bhaktapur) less than 10 miles away, and the 3 are all to be found ion the floor of the Kathmandu Valley.

Andy - you are talking about conurbations there like Leeds/Bradford between which there is no gap!
Many other large cities (apart from London) have subsumed other towns in their expansion - Manchester being a prime example in this country, though I guess not many have swallowed up other cities...

Interesting topic!!
I think most major cities are expanding all the time, although probably incorporating towns rather than other cities as you say, Andrew...

Talking of Leeds/Bradford.....I remember when Leeds/Bradford Airport was called Yeadon Airport! Not sure why it was changed to L/B, it had been called "Yeadon" for years....and isn't technically in Leeds OR Bradford!!!! (My Aunt stays in Otley, W.Yorks in the shadow of the Chevin, and in the flight path for the airport!)
Having said all that about how L/B Airport isn't in either city - Glasgow Airport isn't in Glasgow either(!!!)

My auld dad is originally from Inverness and wasn't happy when it was granted "city" status in 2001, as, in his day it was a "Royal Burgh".

not sure that londoners would be that impressed with that interpretation// you could as well choose the golden mile...  and ruffle as many feathers

am sure every city has the same problem of misconstrued misconceptions  someplace

talking of hearts Edinburgh would be a stake for the claim

GOD BLESS!

Not really: the cities of Kathmandu and Patan are now referred to as 'Kathmandu' by most publications.
