Team GB
« on: June 22, 2011, 11:05:06 »
The Welsh, Scottish and N. Irish Football Associations have decided to stand against any attempt to have a TEAM GB football squad for next year's London Olympics.  Should we now be dismantling the Team GBs that exist within rugby, athletics, rowing, swimming - in fact just about every sport other than football?  Do folk regard this decision by the FAs listed to be short-sighted or an important stand for independence?

this is a bit of a non story really rugby is not an olmpic sport at the minute...

not sure what the reasons are ... but it is still early days i see David Beckham has volunteered to be captain so who knows what with a bit of bumfluff from cameron and prince William could be a winner

dunno if there is an option for a rogue GB team ie players who just turn up to play.. that would be very in keeping with the spirit and history of the olympics wouldn't it...

they could always field a gay GB footie team that would be colourful and fun! or a paralympian team?

is there a women's olympic football competition ?

GOD BLESS!

I don't see that there's any need for football to be in the Olympics at all!! It HAS its various World and European competitions - it doesn't need to bulldoze into the Olympics.
That said, if it IS included, I'm against a GB Team....I'm not being funny here, but it's a given that the English will take over....Beckham has "volunteered" to be captain?
Seriously? Or do you mean "Coach" as I'm thinking he's a tad old for "captain", but even him putting himself forward smacks of arrogance on his part (shock/horror!!!) I just don't
see a GB Football team working!

7s rugby was, IIRC, part of the last or possibly the previous Olympiad.

Its been part of the Olympic Games for 'ever' (it was only NOT included in 1896 and 1932) and a women's competition was added in 1996.

There has been no 'bulldozing' it in, because the Olympic competition predates any of the Continental (Euro/S.American/etc) competitions and and the World Cup which didn't start until 1930

The big difference is that the Olympic competition was only open to amateurs originally and when football became so massively professional, itt was limited to the under 21 (?) age group - for whom of course there is NOEW a World Cup competition anyway.

So then it should be kept to non-pros playing.........there are plenty of amateur sides out there who could be pooled to field a GB team....

i quite like the idea of pubteamGB..  but dunno what sports left are amateur..

i saw something somewhere about a scottish women's footie international thinking it was an awful idea to have team GB cos it loses the national identity....

could it be no-one wants to play with the ingglish unless they is?

what about homeless team GB there was some such world event of homeless people i heard about ... though maybe the same national identity issues arise

seems will just have to be  gayteamGB

GOD BLESS!
