Abuse in Care
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:42:58 »
Didn't see last night's Panorama, but listened to the report - with horror - on this morning's BBC Breakfast.  I wonder just how widespread this is across the 'industry'.
Growing old is compulsory. Growing up is optional.

Have you visited the Garw Valley Railway yet?

I have got it in the can to watch later on. I too heard, with horror, the reports on the news earlier today.

Our DS son (26), who is quite severely mentally disabled, is one of the fortunate one. He has been in his community living project home for just over seven weeks, and loving every minute of life there. They only have three clients in the dormer bungalow, and more than enough staff to meet their needs. The staff couldn't be nicer and our lad is having lots of different experiences I wasn't able to give him, since my husband too became disabled. He has a little job two days a week too.

I saw Panorama last night and I would hope that abuse like that it is not widespread. Four of the staff have been arrested already, I'm sure more will follow.
CQC failed miserably in this case, they are normally very good to be fair.

I have two friends whose parents are both in homes due to them suffering from Dementia. One friend's mum is well cared for and A is happy with how her mum is treated. T on the other hand has had to move his dad twice in the past year because of treatment in homes...and each time he's reported the treatment to both the Management of the home in question and to the authorities!

Very difficult to watch Panorama - horrific that such things happen and I really admire the undercover journalist who managed to keep his cover in such circumstances!

I'm afraid I was not surprised about the findings of this prog. As has been said the pay is notoriously poor in this sector, so you are likely not to get the best quality of staff.
That said, unless you are fairly committed to caring, you would not take on this sort of work-load for this money (unless you are desperate), so there is probable a better than average chance of someone with a vocation in this area being in the post. One of my sisters (who was not really in need of the income, but was in need of something to keep her mind active, and who originally trained as a nurse, but stopped when she had kids) helps at a school for severely disabled kids of secondary school age, most of whom are not expected to live for very much longer after they leave the school. Without question they are all well cared for and loved (tho some more than others no doubt!) by the staff, and I would expect this to be the norm, but there is bound to be a small number of establishments where some of the staff are worn down by circumstances and start taking it out on the inmates. The problem comes when this is not instantly stamped on by the rest of the staff......
