Dose the earth make oil
« on: May 26, 2011, 14:00:39 »
In Russia it is claimed that oil fields replenish and pressure returns after a period, where a well is left dormant. One theory is that the earth produces oil.
They call this black stuff, abiotic oil.

oil is meant to be from the remains of decaying plants and animals isn't it - so not sure, maybe its Earth magic?

Thought I would be the 'spelling police' though  )):  - perhaps it was meant to be 'does' and not 'dose' - unless you were being really clever and it has somehow gone right over my head ..

Dose it matter thought Jan? really? dose it? ;)

The Ruskies drill a lot deeper for oil, so they could be tapping into a different source of oil, as fossil fuel oil found in most parts of the earth would not form at such great depths. up to 5 miles deep.

Are we sure that it formed at the depth it is currently being found at?
Growing old is compulsory. Growing up is optional.

My guess is that it is taking more time to come out of the pores in the rock than they expect, i e that the strata holding the oil is less porous than they believed, so the oil was there all along, but is taking longer to squeeze out to the well then they predict.
