from my knowledge, it's the taxpayer who pays for the Monarchy, NOT the "poor"! And yes, some taxpayers are poorer than others, but there are many, many rich (and doing pretty ok!) taxpayers out there, so NOT exactly accurate to say it's the "poor" who pay - either that or you and I have VERY different definitions of the word "poor"!! Also, who are you calling "daft"? Taxpayers who are happy enough to pay for something that most of Britain is proud of??....or if they aren't they did a damn good impersonation of it yesterday!!
The way earnings are skewed in this country, there are a hell of a lot of taxpayers who are really quite poor. But I have a suggestion. What if our income tax returns included a box to be ticked if one wanted to pay for the monarchy, and if one didn't tick the box then one's tax bill was consequently reduced, such that those only those people who wanted a monarchy paid for them? How many people would tick the box then?
