Good Friday March confined to pavement!!

Good to see Brent Council living up to their reputation as the daft council of the nation.

Mindlessly ridiculous!

How can they hold their pathetic stance when they allowed a Paddy's Day parade to be on the roads?

I'd love to say that I'm surprised at a local authority coming out with such crass stupidity.....but I'm not!! (Sadly, not sure that Brent are any different from any other LA!)

Eli, as Andrew pointed out, he (and I, for that matter) has not heard of any other LA that has made this decision.  At the same time, you have to remember that, when I was training to be a teacher in the 70s, Brent was always known as the 'loony' authority.  Not sure if they were the first to suggest doing away with competitive sports days and similar events within the context of the curriculum, but I believe that they were the first to introduce the policy - despite most Labour MPs telling them that it was bad idea!!

Hey Andy,
Granted I haven't heard of any other authorities making such a decision on Good Friday marches - but then I don't think we have any!!! Never heard of there being one locally! Churches just tend to have Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. But I was talking about daft LA decisions in general, and whilst Brent maybe renowned down south for being the "loony authority", sadly we have our own eejit authorities up here with Spring holidays (not Easter), the usual "Winter holidays" (not Christmas) and the non-competitive sports days (because poor wee cherubs aren't allowed to lose any more - they've all got to be winners(!) Decision after decision being totally ridiculous - and they're meant to be representing US!? Me thinks they forget!!!!
But I still don't get how Brent can authorise a Paddy's Day march (not even their own patron saint!!) and can refuse to authorise a Good Friday march!...On the pavement??? How to they reconcile THAT with good ol' H&S??

Yes, the fact that they allow one but not the other does smack of a certain bias....

i don't know what the fuss is about....

confining the walk to the pavements means less policing .... so it costs less to the taxpayer ...  surely the benefits to society as a whole...  while we are waiting for evidence of Jesus's arrival for real...

GOD BLESS!

Peace and Love,

who is this year significantly  less than enthusiastic towards local efforts of christians to do passion events locally but hey!

Eli, Brent includes Kilburn, which has a high Irish population.

Not true, ecu.  We always walk on the road, and there are often no police anyway.  We rarely have more than 2 or 3 police for a 3-400 strong procession.

Any particular reason?

Ok - but we have Celtic FC down the road - and also have a MASSIVE Irish contingent in the west of Scotland - but we don't have a Paddy's Day March....we have tons of Irish pubs who do their thing but it's hardly Fifth Ave!! (as an aside - would LOVE to be in NYC for Paddy's Day!!!)  but Brent taking in Kilburn doesn't account for them refusing to have a Good Friday March, unless they're WAITING to be challenged on the decision?? GCC certainly would be...!!  And still doesn't account for the Brain of Britain who said the pavement was a good alternative....!!
