Ugandan Anti-Gay legislation

Most of us thought this had been put to bed last year, but it appears that it has been resurrected, and the Ugandan Parliament is due to vote on it within a matter of hours.  Avaaz has reopoened the campaign - please sign it and help push it towards 1 million signatures.

why so late?

i did wonder about whether or not you should try your new friends of the tory party ... last time unka ton had his ore in but hey they really wanted to listen to him! what with rather alot of turmoil goin on in Africa in the middle... and Uganda having riots of its own got anything to do with gay values? probs not but everyting to do with democracy and the status f the oppositon maybe they are just tryin to work out a new way to eliminate the opposition and they luvv gays really...

why so late?

I think that it has only recently been re-presented by those trying to get it passed.  They had, I believe, hoped that it would get through un-noticed because of the other events happening in Uganda at present - such as Musaveni's use of force against democracy protesters.

i did wonder about whether or not you should try your new friends of the tory party ... last time unka ton had his ore in but hey they really wanted to listen to him!

I have actually emailed both DC and NC, asking them to make representations to the Ugandan Ambassador to get Musaveni to intervene, as he did last year.  As for 'unka ton', I don't remember his being involved in any way.  I wrote to Gordon asking the same thing I have asked DC/NC.

last time around i do recall this on the radio unka ton  waded in and some african leaders were involved in the negotiations... i quite like the idea that little david and the clegg poodle will do very much of effect....  little david himself is homophobic

which is all great for democracy don't you think?

are you suggesting that the president is behaving autocratically and there is no political mandate?

i quite like the idea of post colonial states mopping up the going ons by giving refugee status to those likely to be victims ... now extended to Iraq too

Graeme Reid, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) programme at Human Rights Watch, said: "It should be scrapped. The committee's recommendations fall wholly short of making this a bill worth parliament's time.

"Even if these suggestions are taken on board the bill will remain discriminatory, a profound threat to Uganda's LGBT community and put Uganda at odds with its fundamental human rights obligations."


seems there is a whole lot of subtext plot stuff going on which is not stopped.....

Why do you say this, ecu?  Were you hoping that it would be passed?  That's the only reason why I can think you're not happy with the outcome.

i believe i explained... that the postponement of some legislation is not the same as a u-turn....

I think the article points out that, as it is a Private Members' Bill it would have to start from the bottom rung of the ladder again, as and when a new parliament is elected. 

... like the retired bishop christian and shrewd reader of the political context recognises ithas great potential as a front to other abuses of power... (hmmm put like that ....)

From what I understand, the good Bishop was pointing out that, since there is already a lot of unrest in the country, the supporters of the Bill had hoped that they could slip it by unnoticed by the larger audience.
