Popularity should not be the prime motivation for a politician - good to see one standing up for what he thinks is right. I don't know how long he has before the next elections, but hopefully he will have persuaded enough of the population to agree with him by then for it not to be a problem. The big thing is not to be too far ahead of the populous!
I think that 'green' issues are gaining popularity quite fast as it happens - folks can see what we are doing and don't want their children to have to suffer a a result....
it's one thing to feel that 'green glow thing' but it's quite another to be expected to pay extra for it.... (he green politician in question is a woman btw)... as for worrying about their children's future... the future of children having to deal with the unfettered consequences of the past and present is one that in the past tends to bring down civilisations .... before change is realised ... kids are brought up to be a chip off the old block innit?.... i mean any modern society with it's longevity in life span that relies on the kiddies to sort out the mess of the adults is doomed to failure innit?
