I've always thought that "homoPHOBIA" is the wrong term for hatred based on sexuality.....ok, so some people hate what they're afraid of....but I think in this case, the word "phobia" is inappropriate/out of context!

Probably an unpopular opinion - but it is what I think...

I understand what you're saying.  It would be nice if all words ending in 'phobia' meant 'fear of' something.  Unfortunately this isn't what's happened in this case.  Homophobia does encompass antipathy towards homosexuals because of a deep seated fear, and I'd suggest that fear is a factor in many people's homophobic prejudice just as it is in racist prejudice.   But the word homophobia nowadays is recognised to encompass prejudice against homosexuals whatever root that prejudice stems from, and it can go even further, to encompass institutions - just as we have institutional racism where the rules and modes of operation of an institution are prejudiced against people of a different race, we can also have institutional homophobia.

That's what the English language has made of the word  'homophobia', that's the term that everybody uses, and so, even though the 'phobia' part of it can seem out of place, it is still the correct word to use to describe prejudice against homosexuals for reasons (or lack of any reason) other than fear.  There is no 'ism' word to use like there is with racism and sexism.

It's not just what you're given, it's what you do with what you've got.
