The Lounge / Re: Obama Gets a second term
« on: December 02, 2012, 14:17:13  »
The surprising thing about US presidents is that, because they can not be elected more than twice, they are not restrained in their second term by neeeding not to 'loose votes', & can therefore often get more done in the 2nd term than they could in the 1st. I am quietly hopeful - but not very as far as Palestine/Israel is concerned after their opposition to Palestine being granted 'Observer Nation' status... - still, having said that, they have said that the move from Israel after the vote to increase the settlements in the occupied territories was'counterproductive' at least, so I guess it is no longer unconditional support for Israel.

No govt grants for a while now for this, but they pay you for every unit you generate (whether yo use it yourself or not) and the electricity compay also pays you a bit for every unit you export into the Grid.
The rate/unit from the govt was halved during the consultation period without sufficient notice, so was re-instated for a further short period. Anyone who had their system installed beefore the 3rd March got in at the full rate of 43.3p/unit generated, guaranteed for 25 years and index-linked. If you install a system now the pay-out is ~21p/unit.
Companies were and still are installing them 'for free' but then they retain ownership of the system & get the payments, you only benefit from the smaaller electricity bill due to not neeeding to buy so much electricity from your supplier.
I got in just before the rate was reduced back to the current rate (registered the system on 1st March) and paid for it, so I get the payments as well as not buying so much power.

Ecu - Churchill was actually quite a serious historian and was rather an expert on political systems... The advantage of a democracy is that every sso often the electorate has the chance to kick the current bunch ot fwits into the long grass in exchange for a different lot of twits. The problem with all politics is that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely; so it is better to have a check on that power. The trouble is that, once any bunch of well-intentioned peole get the power to do something, that power corrupts what they initially set out to do to into maintaining themselves in power because they know they can't achieve all they want yet so they need longer to do it, so they do things which are designed to keep themselves in power rather than being designed for the good of the country. Having said that, any system where you have the possibility of chucking out the current bunch must be better than on in which you have no chance of deciding who is in charge, since the former, while it may in effect be a temporary dictatorship, it is just that - temporary: whereas the latter can be a long-term dictatorship; and while a beneficiaal dictator is arguably the best form of government they are as rare as rocking-horse ****.

No indeed - I know it wasn't (and indeed probably isn't) restricted to the RC. I was just saying that, since RC priests were not expected to be looking for a wife (whereas other RC men were), it was a good way of hiding the fact that you were homosexual.
Given that the priests then were put in charge of adolescent boys (and indeed late teen-age boys) who were often deeply influenced by their teachers, it is easy to understand how they could also be influenced (possibly inintentionally at first) to agree to sexual acts. The more the priest gets away with this the more he might look for it and an escalation can set in. I am NOT saying this is the norm or that the children are at fault. Nor am I saying that the solution is strightforwardly one of 'loving his bride' (in this case the church) as Christ loved the church.
However, enforced celebacy for someone who is not so inclined (and posssibly someone who does not really have a vocation to the priesthood, but is using it to hide a homosexual tendency), as JJ points out, can result in normal sexual desires becoming peverted, so that someone who would not 'normally' even think of considering sex with a minor (of whatever gender he is attracted to) might well end up taking advantage of someone who is in a vulnerable position and very 'open' to him. I do NOT condone this - just trying to understand how it can come about...
As you say, the desire to abuse children comes from a disorded sexual desire; the question in my mind is what caused the disordering of the sexual desire. While there is no direct connection between homosexual tendencies and the abuse of children, there may well be one between an enforced celebacy, a homosexual tendency and the abuse of young men/boys.

The Churchill quote is that "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried" - which I have always liked... The biggest problem is in actualy achieving democracy!

I think we all have to decide for ourselves in thse questions JJ - for some (at one end of the spectrum) that will mean simply accepting the order as laid down by someone in authority, for others (at the other end of the spectrum) it will mean thinking it through for themselves in the light of their experience and knowledge - and, as the use uf the word spectrum implies(!), there is a continuous range between these two. I believe that most people will accept some things and think through others.

Marriage gives people experiences which can not be got outside of a long-term relationship, and which enhance their ability to perform in the pastoral side fo the role of a priest. I am not talking about the sexual acts here, but about the experience of living with someone as an intimate partner, with all the ups and downs of any such relationship.
That said, there is nothing against this experience having been acquired and the relationship no longer being in existence, so yes, Ecu, a divorcee or widdow would also have this extra knowledge (though of course the RC tradition does not allow a divorce so in their eyes a divorcee is still married and inelligible for the priesthood!).
The other problem with an enforced celibacy is that it has been used as a cover for homosexuality. Men who were not geting married in the RC were frequently asked why not - and when homosexuality was a crime this was rather difficult - indeed it is still a bit difficult as it is seen as a sin to be this way by many (and even more see the act as a sin).  As a resuly, in order not to be asked this question a large number of gay men have gone into the priesthood, so they are no longer expected to be looking for a wife! The trouble is that it did not stop them from being attracted to othe men, and was a contributory cause of the scandal of priestly abuse of boys in the Catholic schools...

In answer to JJ - "Is it "correct" to finally decide late in life that democracy is better than capitalism? Or silence better than talk?" - no I don't think it is. I think it is better to talk than to try to exist in silence, and it is better to decide this sooner that later, at least as far as trying to live with your neighbour/nearst & dearest is concerned (i e it is not right to do so late in life but rather to do so early in life if possible). Having said that, better to do so late in life than not to do so at all... As to the question of politics, that is definitely open for debate! Which is a more Christian stand-point - democracy or capitalism - and are they mutually exclusive anyway? Can democracy actually exist without capitalism? Is capitalism intrisically wrong, or is it the old question of what you do with the money thus generated? Money is not, of itself, evil; rather it is the love of money which is evil.

I'm sorry to say that I think it is another example of the (some would say hypocritical) way the Catholic chuch thinks... Another example is that, if you are to pay the Curia nicely, there are more reasons for which a marriage can be annulled in the catholic thinking than there are excuses for a divorce, but you are not allowed to divorce... and incidentally any children you had before a marriage was anulled were born within wedlock despite the annulment meaning that the marriage never existed in the first place!
As you say, sex is one of the things whioch helps to bind a marriage togerther, - it is not (at least IMO!) purely for the purpose of procreation, but is an expression of the mutual bond. The trouble is that the RC have got thoroughly hung up on sex to an even greater extent than the C of E - which is saying quite something!
